About

Antonești Monastery is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Argeș Valley. It was named after its founder, Marshal Ion Antonescu, and is dedicated to the "Birth of Saint John the Baptist".
Antonești Monastery is located in the commune of Corbeni, 20 km north of Curtea de Argeș, and is an important pilgrimage point for those who cross the town. The monastic settlement is built very close to the Vidraru Dam and the Transfăgărășan mountain route.

Few people know that this place was built on the orders of Marshal Antonescu. In the summer of 1941, shortly after Romania entered World War II, a real flood hit the inhabitants of the Upper Argeș Valley. The torrential rains swept away everything in their path, and an entire village in the Argeș commune of Corbeni disappeared under the waters.

The head of state, General Ion Antonescu, decided that the village should be completely rebuilt for the affected families. The new village was named "Antonești", and the Orthodox community in the area took care of building a church in the locality. Gheorghe Erbașu donated the land, and the construction of the church began in August 1943. Due to the hardships of the times, the church remained unfinished, later falling into disrepair. Through the care of His Eminence Father Calinic, Archbishop of Argeș and Muscel, the church started in 1943 received the status of a monastery in 1994, and between 1995 and 2004 extensive consolidation, restoration, plastering and painting works were carried out. The works were crowned with the consecration of the church on June 24, 2004, on the feast day of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. Next to the church, a cell block was built between 2000 and 2004, at the base of which the chapel dedicated to Saint and Righteous Job was arranged.
