Capra River, Romania

About

One of the most beautiful lakes in our country is located on the southern slope of the Făgăraș Massif, it is called Capra Lake and invites tourists to catch their breath even for a few moments, in the middle of nature.

Capra Lake is a glacial lake hidden in the heart of the Făgăraș Mountains, at an altitude of 2230 meters and has a maximum depth of about 10-11 meters. From Capra Lake, the Capra stream (a tributary of the Argeș River) leaves, which in just a few meters forms another small lake, Căprița. Further, the stream descends south and just before Transfăgărășan forms the beautiful Capra Waterfall. The lake occupies a total area of 1.80 hectares and has an irregular, almost round shape.

For those who want to visit the Transfăgărășan area and the Făgărăș Mountains, Capra Lake is a tourist attraction that should not be missing from the list of natural attractions in the area. The entire area offers a view that is difficult to describe in words on the Buda, Râiosu and Mușeteica peaks.

On the southern shore of the lake, there are two monuments erected in memory of the victims of a violent avalanche that took place in 1963. They were crossing the route that leads to the Arpășelului Ridge for the first time in winter, very difficult even outside the cold season.

Visiting the lake is recommended to be done in a group and with the minimum necessary, mountain-specific equipment.
