About
Jgheburoasa Lake (natural monument) is a protected area of national interest corresponding to the III IUCN category
(mixed nature reserve), located in Argeș County, on the administrative territory of Rucăr commune.
The nature reserve declared a protected area by Law No. 5 of March 6, 2000, is located in the southern part of the Făgăraș Mountains, in the Zârna valley basin, at an altitude of 2,150 m, and covers an area of 2 hectares.
The natural area represents the lake of glacial origin (water lake) and the surrounding area, located at the beginning of the Jgheburoasa valley, with banks covered by vegetation consisting mostly of small bushes of black bilberry, a plant of the Vaccinum myrtillus species.
Winter in the Fagaras Mountains is very harsh, with an extremely high risk of avalanches, even from the first snowfall. Access is recommended only for very trained climbers or tourists with full winter equipment and only when the weather and snow conditions are optimal for the ascent.
