About
At the Suslănești Fossil Reserve - a protected natural area of international interest - fossil fish skeletons over 50 million years old have been discovered.
8 km from Câmpulung, on the left side of the Argeșel Valley, in Suslănești, on the Marlauz hill, at an altitude of 680 m, is the Marlauz Fossil Reserve. It is of particular importance due to the wealth of fossil fish skeletons, which are found in the clays in the form of fine slabs dating back almost 56 million years.
The Suslănești Fossil Reserve was declared a natural monument due to its special scientific importance. It is a protected area of paleontological type, being included in the third category of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The reserve covers an area of approximately 3.5 hectares. The area is devoid of much vegetation, being furrowed by ditches resulting from runoff phenomena or water torrents on the slopes.
In the disodilic and menilitic schists of Oligocene age here, fossil fish species such as "Clupea longimana", "Caraux macoveii" (oval in shape, 14 cm long), "Rhombus stamatini" (with both eyes on the left side of the head), "Scorpaenoides popovicii" (a fish of only 10-20 mm, with an elongated body, with a triangular pectoral fin three times higher than the body) are found.
The disodilic shales from Suslănești also include some plant species that populated these lands, such as "Fagus feroniae", "Cinnamomum lanceolatum" (the ancestor of the cinnamon tree, found today in Southeast Asia), "Laurus tetrantheroides" and "Laurus phoeboides" (from which the bay tree is derived) and others.
The Suslănești fossil reserve is considered by geologists to be a geotectonic site, grouping the discovered fossils into three large categories, namely: native fish, migratory fish and deep-sea fish. No less than 30 species of fish have been identified, and more than half of them represented new species for this science.
Location: The fossil reserve is located in the eastern part of the village of Suslănești, on the administrative territory of the commune of Mioarele, near the national road DN 73D, on the Boteni - Suslănești - Fântânea route.
The distance between Pitești and Suslănești is 54 km and can be covered in approximately one hour.
