Rupea, formerly Cohalm, is a city in Brasov County, consisting of the villages Fişer and Rupea (residence). It has a population of 5,269 inhabitants (2011). It was a Dacian settlement (Rumidava) and later, during the Roman occupation, its name was changed to Rupes ("stone").
The Rupea fortress, erected on the Cohalm Hill, dominating the upper city, was built and expanded in the 14th century as a fortress and refuge for the surrounding villages. It is currently in a state of ruin.
