Balneary Salt Mine

Salt is said to bring good luck. But, first and foremost, salt brings health.

Turda Salt mine is known for its curative properties, being an important treatment destination. A simple walk through the salt mine can help you feel good.

The specialists recommend salt therapy as a very effective solution in the treatment of respiratory diseases, but also for stimulating immunity, supporting the detoxification of the body, improving the functioning of the digestive tract, also helping to reduce the effects of fatigue and stress.
Show, experience, and legend. Moreover, it is an impressive source of health, right here, in the depths.

Turda Salt Mine has extraordinary health benefits. It is a sterile environment, the total concentration of microorganisms being extremely low. This makes Turda Salt Mine to be among the first salt mines in the country and abroad used for speleotherapeutic purposes.

The Balneary Salt Mine is composed of a microclimate and sanogenic factors that offer optimal conditions for the recovery therapies of the various internal conditions as well as for prophylaxis and sanogenesis.

Here are the specific beneficial conditions of the Balneary Salt Mine:

  • constant air temperature, relatively low, oscillating between 11 and 12 0C at all points and stages of determination, throughout the year; allows the process of adaptation and acclimatization of the body;
  • the relative humidity, with minimal variations, with values between 78 and 82% at the entrance to the salt mine and average values between 73 and 80% in different rooms (Rudolf Chamber, Gisela Chamber, etc.) has beneficial effects on the respiratory tract, allowing the mucociliary apparatus to work optimally in saturated atmosphere and body temperature
  • the presence of salt aerosols in the form of solid particles;
  • the air movement is practically negligible: at the entrance to the salt mine it is 0.64–0.70 m/sec and in Rudolf Chamber 0.02 m/sec;
  • air ionization with small ions in variable quantities, with the predominance of positive ions; in Rudolf Chamber: n+ = 438, n- = 307;
  • the concentration of allergens is practically zero; also, there are no air pollutants and pathogenic germs; microbiological determinations did not reveal the presence of pathogenic germs of yeasts and fungi, thus respecting the condition of fresh air (the total number of germs in a cubic meter being below 2,000 in all determinations performed); – minimum-level radioactivity, determination results being below the minimum detectable activity of 0.1 pCOl air radon 222.
Here are the therapeutic indications of salt therapy:

  • allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinitis;
  • amygdala hypertrophy, adenoid vegetations (polyps);
  • recurrent respiratory infections (angina, pharyngitis, tracheobronchitis, pneumonia, recurrent nasal polyps;
  • non-allergic/intrinsic/non-atopic bronchial asthma and allergic/extrinsic/atopic bronchial asthma, mild and moderate asymptomatic or symptomatic forms;
  • chronic allergic bronchitis, chronic obstructive bronchitis;
  • chronic obstructive bronchopneumonia;
  • skin conditions: eczema, atopic dermatitis.
Salt therapy is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • under 3 years and over 65 years of age;
  • persistent severe asthma; asthma; complications of asthma crisis – atelectasis, pulmonary emphysema, pneumothorax, respiratory acidosis; complications related to medication – severe bronchospasm, severe allergic reactions;
  • COPD complications – acute respiratory failure, chronic decompensated pulmonary heart, pneumothorax;
  • TB regardless of location;
  • pulmonary neoplasms;
  • acute ENT disorders – rhinopharyngitis, tracheobronchitis, acute pneumonia;
  • cardio-vascular diseases (HTA stage III, recent myocardial infarction, angina pectoris with frequent seizures, chronically decompensated pulmonary heart), grade II-III heart failure;
  • digestive disorders – acute hyperacid gastritis, acute hepatitis, acute cholecystitis;
  • acute kidney disorders, bladder/kidney lithiasis;
  • decompensated diabetes;
  • collagenosis, acute/chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases;
  • peripheral and central neurological disorders (craniocerebral trauma, brain abscess, stroke, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy);
  • third-trimester pregnancy;
  • anxiety-depressive syndrome, claustrophobia;
  • postoperatively, for a period of 1–2 months.
What is advisable during the salt treatment so you can benefit from the best results:

  • speleotherapy procedures are preferably between 9 am and 14 pm, for a duration of 14– 18 days for adults and 7–10 days for children;
  • specificities by age-group:
    1. children aged under 1 year – no salt therapy is recommended for this age- group;
    2. children aged between 1–2 years – the doctor’s approval is required before starting a salt therapy treatment, without exceeding 1-1.5 hours/day, for a maximum of 7 days;
    3. children aged over 2 years – 2–3 hours/day for 7–10 days are recommended. We advise you to seek the advice of the medical personnel for personalizing the salt treatment according to the age and the medical condition of your child;
    4. the elderly over 65 years of age, with cardiovascular pathology – the doctor’s approval is recommended when starting the treatment as well as periodic monitoring of the cardiovascular status while under treatment (clinical symptomatology, heart rate, blood pressure), without exceeding 2– 3 hours/day for 7 days.
  • the effects of a salt therapy treatment persist for about 2-3 months after finishing the therapy, therefore it is recommended to perform two treatments per year;
  • the session of salt therapy includes a period of stay in stationary treatment area – Gisela Mine (longer duration in the first and last days of treatment) and a period in the underground – Rudolf Mine (the time is inversely proportional to the duration spent in the stationary treatment area);
  • persons who do not comply with the recommendations offered by the salt minemedical staff undertake responsibility for the possible adverse/negative effects on their health arising from exposure to the salt environment.
