The Potter's Household Duplex from Găleșoia, Gorj County

     Two potter's households from the village of Găleșoaia, belonging to the same family and dating from different centuries, were transferred in the museum in 2002: the "old" one, built in mid-19th century, and the "new" one, dating since 1926.

     Belonging to two different time horizons and social categories, the duplex shows the development of a potters' family after a significant apropriation following the First World War for deeds of military valour. The old house is built of oak beams, plastered on the outside and inside on hoops of hazel, acacia or pine, on a foundation of river stone. The "new" house is testimony to a new social and economic status. It was built of brick, has two floors, and a monumental staircase. 

     The pot-burning oven appears in both households, a distinctive sign of the owners' trade. The high-volume oven has been reconstructed in the new household.

   The complex from Găleșoaia preserves the memory of this strong centre of pottery in Gorj county, which has disappeared from the map of the country due to the mining that took its place.
