The Potter's Workshop and Household from Săcel, Maramureș County

     Of all the pottery centres in Romania, the commune of Săcel in Maramureș county has preserved to this day the most archaic technical procedures for pressing clay and waterproofing pots. The potter's household was transferred to the museum in 1968.

     The house, modest but with a rustic charm, stands on one level and its walls are plastered on the inside with a mixture of clay and cereal straws. The floor, witness to generations of potters, is made of yellow, beaten earth. The entrance to the potter's world is through a double door, inlaid with specific decorative motifs, masterfully crafted with a half-round chisel.

      Around the house, several buildings harmoniously complete the whole household: the potter's shed and the kiln shed. The oversized roof of the shed creates a generous space for housing the means of transport, while the area for storing fodder is suitably enlarged. The fencing system is unique in the museum, made of juniper and hornbeam, carefully braided in a vertical pattern.
