About
The Lipovan household in Mahmudia, Tulcea county, faithfully recreates the life of a fisherman in the Danube Delta. Inside the house we are shown a surprising and original combination of old and new. Alongside the traditional heating systems, fed from the porch, such as the blind stove (hruba) or the bread oven (pecica) and the ever-present heated clay bed (lâjanca), there are precious icons painted on wood and set in metal, highly decorative textiles or pieces of furniture taken from the town scene and adapted to local taste. A very special object for the Lipovans of Dobrogea is the samovar, a traditional vessel in which water for tea was boiled. Here you can also see the Lipovan bania (sauna), a building not to be missed in Lipovan households, a true symbol of this ethnic group.
The photographs depict the household displayed in the museum, along with old black-and-white images showing the local people and their tools: fishing nets, seines, and the bread oven.
