About

Livada oil mill and household blends harmoniously into the rural architectural landscape of the Zarand region from late 19th century. The ensemble includes a traditional house, a hexagonal shed, a pigsty, a hutch with a sheep stable, and a pantry housing the tools for making oil. The oilseeds were ground using a foot-operated milling stone. A press with fixed screws and movable nuts was used for pressing.
In the centre of the courtyard stands the hooked well, made of solid oak beams, skillfully worked. Unique details can be seen in the making of the gate, and the pedestrian gate, which are made of a woven panel of hazel wicker. The open porch, supported by ornate posts, protects the facade and serves as a shelter for the massive beech barn where grains were stored. Every week, the barn lid became a rack for work clothes.
