About
The village of Hamba lies just ten kilometres from Sibiu and takes its name from the Rooster’s Stream — known in German as Hahnbach or Hahnenbach. The house you’re visiting is a faithful reconstruction of Saxon rural life and reflects the lifestyle of a middle-class farming family. Its 17th and 18th-century architecture illustrates the structured reforms introduced during the Habsburg era.
An inscription on the front of the house dates it to 1757, although it has undergone several changes over time. Unusually for a Saxon home, the entrance is through the back room, which originally served as a kitchen. This space includes a bread oven, and it once functioned as a distillery, a storage area for tools, and the access point to the attic.
The central room served multiple purposes — both as a living area and for cooking. The front room, which overlooks the street, was the most important part of the house. It was used for storing grain and fruit, negotiating livestock trades, and hosting significant family gatherings.
