About

The water mill with a horizontal wheel arrived in the museum in 1967 from Svinița village in the Danube Plain. The small and unsteady flow of the streams in the Danube gorge required artificial land arrangements and the adaptation of a very ingenious system to improve the water intake, which consists of accelerating the speed and thus increasing its pressure.
The creek water is guided through an artificial channel positioned above the mill, then directed to the wheel through a hollowed tree trunk. In the past, the channels were made of burned hollow tree trunks, whereas today they are made from reinforced concrete.
The sturdy building, made of sandstone and river stone houses a hydraulic system under a shingle roof. The rectangular plan divides the mill into two functional rooms: one for the grinders, with a hearth, and another for the grinding plant, located above the wheel, offering a spectacular view of the mechanisms in action.
