About

The monument greets you with an allegory carved on the frontispiece, warning you not to sin at the mill. Spectacular decorative motifs illustrate the original sin, combining pre-Christian and Christian elements. The whirlwind, the wolf's tooth, the sun, the rope, the snake in the apple tree, the cross and the fish have been carved and incised into an impressive syncretic tableau.
The mill from Orșova is a hydraulic grain milling plant that harnesses the potential energy of water. According to the year carved on the same flange, it dates from 1833 and was reassembled in the museum in 1965. Built of beech beams, plastered with yellow earth and painted blue, the mill has a roof covered with shingles. The two rooms accommodate the miller's house and the mill itself, under which the waterwheel is mounted to protect it from the weather and to enable it to grind in winter at low temperatures.
