About

Built in the middle of the 19th century, the potter's household from Marginea illustrates one of the oldest traditional pottery techniques in Romania. At the heart of this craft is the black pottery, which involves decorating pots by polishing with stone and then firing them.
The house is not only a home but also a potter's studio. Its structure includes an open hallway in the middle, a small room for the potter's workshop, and a larger room leading into the pantry adjacent to the building. In the courtyard we find the pot-firing kiln, the barn with a stable, and the shadoof, the bottom of which is made from a secular tree trunk, hollowed out with a chisel.
Among the remarkable aspects of pottery in Marginea, the household illustrates techniques such as clay preparation by beating with the pounder, cleaning by cutting with a carving tool, and kneading by stamping with the foot, together with decoration techniques involving imprinting with a rolling pin and polishing with a river stone.
