About
Built in 1796, as indicated by an inscription on the porch, the cemetery church 'Ascension of the Lord' from Comănești is also referred to as 'Saint George' in some documents. The wooden structure combines simple forms with carefully carved details. On the west side, the open porch has four ornate pillars supporting the carved pediment. Inside, there is a entrance hall, a nave and an altar.
The altar's pentagonal shape is commonly found in wooden churches in the south and west of the country, particularly in Oltenia. The pentagon is a traditional architectural solution that offers stability and a harmonious orientation towards the east, symbolising light and resurrection.
The altar is separated from the nave by a wooden icon screen, which was made almost a century later in 1894. Inside, there is a proscomidiar on the north side, where the priest prepares the bread and wine for the service, and a diconicon on the south side, where the priest's vestments are kept.
