About
🍇 Towards the fruit storehouse from Polovragi 🧭
We are heading to the next stop on our route, located on the left side of the lake: the fruit-growing fruit store brought from Polovragi, in Gorj County, a construction dating from 1883. It is representative of traditional architecture from the orchard regions of northern Oltenia, where the production of plum brandy (țuică) was a widespread traditional occupation.
Listen to the audio guide 🎧 and observe the building set on a slope, with a stone masonry cellar used for fermenting plums and storage, and an upper floor made of horizontal fir beams where the brandy barrels and fruit-harvesting vessels were kept. Notice the carved wooden porch, the double entrance door, and the massive staircase carved from a single tree trunk, all highlighting the robustness and sobriety of the construction.
Then answer together the discovery questions 🔍:
1. What was the role of the stone cellar and what activities related to plum processing took place there? 🍑🪵
2. What objects were stored on the upper floor and what do they tell us about traditional plum brandy production? 🛢️🍶
3. Which architectural and decorative elements (porch, pillars, staircase, gate) reflect both the utilitarian function and the craftsmanship of local woodworkers? 🪚✨
